Marriage Licenses & Certificates

Marriage Licenses & Certificates

In Winslow, the Town Clerk is responsible for issuing and recording Marriage Licenses.  Approximately 75 Marriage Licenses are issued each year.  In Maine, the application for a Marriage License must be made in the municipality of residence of either Party A or Party B.  If the applicants are not residents of Maine, they may apply in any Town or City in Maine.

*Due to the amount of time it takes to issue a Marriage License, the Town of Winslow will only process them from 8:00 am to 5:45 pm on Monday through Thursday.

The current fee for a Marriage License is $40.00.  The marriage application (intentions) is completed by both Party A & Party B; each person must show proof of identity (Driver's License or State ID).  If either applicant has been previously married, they must provide proof (certified copy of either the divorce decree or death certificate) that shows the marriage has ended.  Once the application is complete, the Marriage License can be issued and is valid for a period of 90 days.

The State of Maine allows Marriages to be performed by a Member of the Clergy, a Maine Notary Public or an Attorney who is licensed in Maine.  Once the ceremony has taken place, THE OFFICIANT must return the completed license to the issuing Clerk, after the license is returned, a certified copy of the Marriage Certificate can be requested.  The cost for a certified copy is $15.00 for the first copy and $6.00 for each additional copy of that record.

The following information is helpful in locating a Marriage License:
  • Name of Party A & Party B
  • Date of Marriage
  • Residence of Party A & Party B at the time of their marriage.
