AGENCY BRIEF – Located in central Maine, the Winslow Police Department provides 24/7 emergency services to approximately 8,000 residents and covers approximately 40 square miles of rural as well as developed patrol areas. The agency is comprised of twelve (12) full-time sworn law enforcement officers.

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE – The Winslow Police Department desires a proactive, independent, and community-based candidate. We encourage diligence and dedication to our profession. Our ideal applicants will have a team-oriented mindset; they must be motivated to challenge themselves, learn, train, and improve alongside the rest of the agency.

OPPORTUNITIES – We encourage autonomy and assist our officers with seeking advancement in the areas of expertise they intend to master, so they may share their training with our team. We welcome involvement in our mission and collateral duties. Officers are encouraged to work with CID and conduct their own investigations, including drug investigations, if that piques their interest.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS – We seek candidates with a strong moral character and community-oriented policing ideals.  Required training can be provided by the Winslow Police Department for the right candidates. Regardless of experience, we strongly encourage anyone interested in a law enforcement career to apply.

The successful candidates must meet, or be prepared to meet, the following requirements:
    • Pass the Maine Criminal Justice Academy’s (MCJA) ALERT Test.
    • Pass the MCJA Law Enforcement Phase I, II, and III Training Programs (or be eligible for a waiver from the MCJA).
    • Pass the MCJA full-time academy (BLETP or MCBPS).
    • Be a minimum age of 21 years old (or 20 years old with at least 60 college credit hours).
    • Possess a valid Maine driver’s license or be able to obtain one.
    • Pass a thorough background investigation as well as a financial check.
    • May be required to pass a polygraph and psychological evaluation.
    • If not already a graduate of the full-time MCJA, must be healthy and in sufficient physical condition to pass MCJA entrance standards at the 40th
BENEFITS PACKAGE – The Town of Winslow offers a comprehensive and competitive wage and benefits package. Officers are part of a collective bargaining unit. Our package includes the following:
    • Medical and dental insurance with an HRA is offered at no cost to the employee. Insurance is provided through Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and Delta Dental.
    • Retirement options are offered through the Maine Public Employees Retirement System (MEPERS) and ICMA Retirement Plan. Officers who choose the MEPERS (3C) are eligible to retire after 25 years of service, with no age requirement, at 2/3 of their three highest yearly earnings. This plan allows portability between other agencies with MEPERS.
    • Overtime opportunities are routinely available. In lieu of overtime hours worked, employees are able to earn compensation. Additionally, there are overtime opportunities with specialized details and grant funding.
    • Paid holidays, as well as vacation, personal, and sick time, are provided to employees.
    • A cell phone and yearly clothing allowance are included.
    • We offer a generous outfitting of your initial equipment.
    • Stipends are available for associate degrees, bachelor degrees, and master degrees. We also provide opportunities to reimburse college tuition.
    • We offer stipends for prior military service and law enforcement certificates.
    • Lateral salary adjustment commensurate with prior full-time law enforcement service, of up to 20 years, is offered with pay rates that range from $30.44 to $37.55. A new contract will be negotiated this year, too.
    • The Winslow Police Department operates on twelve-hour shifts with every other weekend off (2-2-3 schedule). The weekends off consist of three days (Friday-Sunday).
And much more!
